An easy win at Wyong has secured a Gold Coast bid in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) next month for Bjorn Baker’s smart colt Unencumbered.
The Testa Rossa colt was far too good for their rivals in today’s $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) coming from last to first in a barnstorming performance.
Having now won three of their four starts Unencumbered will look to hit the big time with a lucrative 2014 Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic victory on January 11.
Coming off a victory at Randwick’s Kensington track from December 7, today jockey Nathan Berry had the youngster settled at the back of the small seven horse field after jumping.
Race favourite, Garry Frazer’s Snitzel filly Sheer Style, hit the front after a lovely jump from barrier two.
She was looking to go all-the-way and salute for the punters again after a win in the $200,000 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m) at Ballarat last start.
Sheer Style couldn’t hold onto her lead at Wyong though.
They all bunched at the turn for home and it was Unencumbered up on the inside who got the upper hand.
He stormed away to extend to a tidy lead while Clockwise Classic runner-up Geromayo moved up into second.
On the line Unencumbered ($2.60) had a length to spare over Mick Price’s Charge Forward colt Geromayo ($10) who is also likely to have earned a Gold Coast bid after this afternoon’s performance.
A fading odds-on fancy Sheer Style ($1.85) meanwhile held on for third a further half length away again.
Pre-Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic result Sheer Style was the $8 third favourite for the Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic odds behind Echo Gal ($5.50) and Oakleigh Girl ($6).
She’s since drifted out to $14 however after failing to go back-to-back in the Magic Millions restricted juvenile features.
Magic Millions Gold Coast Classic odds on Unencumbered meanwhile have firmed right in.
They are now at $6.50 as the close third pick in the markets having been slashed from $11.
Geromayo meanwhile is now at $11, in from $12, in the pre-field markets for next month’s big one in Queensland.
