Bjorn Baker’s smart young colt Unencumbered will get another chance to further enhance their Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2014 claims when they race in the Wyong edition of the restricted feature this Thursday.
One of just seven juveniles racing in this year’s $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m), the son of Testa Rossa has drawn barrier six and will be ridden by Nathan Berry.
Unencumbered has had three career starts so far enjoying two wins and is out to make it a hat trick this week.
Their latest effort was at Randwick’s Kensington track on December 7 when Berry rode them to a 1000m win, their only start over 1100m producing a third at Rosehill in October.
Unencumbered is already one of the top fancies for the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on January 11.
They pay $11 in the futures market for that race that is led by flying fillies Echo Gal ($5.50) and Oakleigh Girl ($6).
The only other runner in this year’s Wyong Magic Millions Classic field with a previous turf triumph to their name is the Garry Frazer-trained Sheer Style in gate two with Blake Shinn aboard.
Set to start the favourite, the Snitzel filly enjoyed two second place finishes before breaking her maiden status at Ballarat on November 24.
There she enjoyed a length victory over Geromayo in the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic in the wet, the youngster looking a little more vulnerable of firmer ground over further distance at Wyong.
Sheer Style and Unencumbered faced off in her debut at Rosehill back on October 26 when she ran second beating the third placed Unencumbered by a half length.
There the colt carried 57.5kg to the filly’s 54.5kg but on Thursday Unencumbered drops a kilo to 56.5kg, a nice advantage according to their trainer.
“Now we come back to the normal weight scale for colts against fillies and I just think he has improved a lot,” Baker told Racing Network this week speaking of the rematch.
“When they met for the first time, my colt was hunted up on the speed, which I don’t think is the best way to ride him.
“Personally I don’t think there should be much between them in the market, I am definitely surprised that we are $4 and she is $2.20.”
Also coming off a nice last start effort then are the Mick Price-trained Geromayo (barrier three) and Fly Buy Fly (barrier seven).
Charge Forward colt Geromayo was runner-up to Sheer Style in the Ballarat Magic Millions Classic while I Am Invincible filly Fly Buy Fly also comes off a second place finish but over 900m at Scone from last Friday.
Rounding out the field are then Wicket Style colt Tommy on the rails, the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly Spirit Of Joy and Datable for Kris Lees.
