Aeronautical To The Spelling Paddock After Razor Sharp Handicap Victory

Aeronautical will head to the spelling paddock after recording a narrow victory over Heart Testa in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1150m) at the Randwick Kensington track on Saturday.

The win was Aeronautical’s first in over a year and gave some joy to trainer Lionel Cohen after his star galloper missed out on receiving an invitation to contest the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin last Sunday – the race he had been set for at the start of his campaign.

Aeronautical was positioned at the tail of the field but made ground on the inside of the track before finishing with a strong burst to score victory from the consistent Heart Testa and a rejuvenated Pampelonne.

Cohen was delighted that Aeronautical was able to bounce back from his disappointing performance in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and record his maiden black type race win but was quick to pay credit to the stellar ride of Hugh Bowman.

“It’s a relief to see him win,” Cohen said after the race.

“He has had his excuses in the past but we came here today thinking there were would be no excuses.

“I’m proud of the horse, because on his day, he is a top sprinter, he’s proven that.

“I always have belief in this horse but you always worry when you come off a poor run like he had but he was affected by an allergy and didn’t fire in Melbourne.”

Aeronautical proved that he could be competitive at Group 1 level in the autumn, finishing third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and sixth in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m), and Cohen revealed that the son of Encosta De Lago will be set for similar races next year.

“I know on his day, this horse is up with the best,” Cohen said.

“I did not take him to the Newmarket thinking I was wasting our time, I was confident he would run well, and I was confident he would run well in The Shorts.

“I’m going to look at the Group 1 sprints in the autumn because he is up to that level.”
