Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Villiers Stakes Day action is set to come to a close at Randwick’s Kensington track this Saturday with the running of the 2013 Razor Sharp Handicap, betting tips to finish the day with a win listed below.
Originally the race drew 14 final acceptors, including two emergencies, the first of which #13 Jacquinot Bay is now assured of a start following the early scratching of the Peter Moody-trained Club Command.
Before they were even guaranteed a run the Guy Walter-trained Jacquinot Bay was one of the top fancies in the markets for this year’s $100,000 Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1150m) – set to jump as Race 8 at 5:50pm (AEST).
Their price is now at $15, the Galileo six-year-old getting the rails run from barrier one in the summer sprint.
Razor Sharp Handicap odds meanwhile are firmly led by $3 favourite Heart Testa, the market move in gate five with Jason Collett to ride.
Last start the Chris Waller-trained four-year-old ran second to Zaratone in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) after being badly hampered, an effort they are tipped to improve on here with a better run.
Zaratone then is another one of the single figure Razor Sharp Handicap chances this year at $8 along with the Peter Snowden-trained three-year-old Safeguard ($6.50) and Aeronautical ($5.25).
So will the favourite salute for the punters in this year’s Razor Sharp? Or is there an upset result on the cards, and if so, by which horse?
#7 Heart Testa ($3)
It really is hard to go past the form of the favourite here, especially as they get in with 55.5kg which is a kilo less than their Starlight Stakes. Before that they won over 1100m at Rosehill defeating Cape Kidnappers in a Benchmark 95 with 57kg. That was their fifth top three finish from as many starts this prep and they are certainly on the up-and-up. Should be able to turn the tables on Zaratone here who goes up from 58kg to 59kg and has the far outside barrier.
#11 Safeguard ($6.50)
With only 54kg this Snowden-trained Exceed And Excel colt is well positioned to score their third Group victory. They line up for only their eighth career start here but are already a dual Group 3 winner thanks to the Kindergarten Stakes in April and the Vain Stakes at Caulfield in August. Both of those were over the 1100m which is looking their pet distance, so the 1150m (down from 1200m due to the move from the course proper) will work to their advantage here. Come off a brave Starlight Stakes third carrying the same weight and should be able to finish in the money again here, especially after they suffered early interference which stopped a perfect run for them a fortnight ago.
#1 Zaratone ($7.50)
They’re the veteran of the field at eight-years-old but continue to race like a horse half their age so are definitely deserving of a chance here. Have to overcome the far outside barrier and the 59kg top weight though which rules them out of the win for mine. Kathy O’Hara back from injury returns to the saddle replacing fill-in Brenton Avdulla who won the Starlight Stakes on them two weeks back. Before that they were third to Heart Testa over the same track and distance when hampered by a 60.5kg weight allocation. This distance is right, track shouldn’t be an issue, has class and zest and confidence and consistency. Lots to like.
