In 2011 Gai Waterhouse celebrated a Magic Millions 2YO Classic win on the Gold Coast, albeit on protest, with Driefontein and this summer is out to emulate their prep with another promising filly Echo Gal.
Driefontein was one of the best of her age getting around in the summer of 2011 winning her opening four races on the trot including a protest win over stablemate No Looking Back in the $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).
The run before that lucrative feature she beat home subsequent Group 1 winner Sizzling in the $150,000 Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) in December, an end-of-year target she’s also penciled in for Startum two-year-old Echo Gal this year.
Like Driefontein who won their Randwick debut by three lengths, Echo Gal made a big impact in her first official start this month.
On Wednesday she raced over 1000m at Warwick Farm with Tommy Berry aboard and was able to beat home her rivals by a minimum four lengths.
That effort was enough to catch the eye of the bookies who immediately installed her as one of the top fancies for the 2014 Magic Millions 2YO Classic in Queensland on January 11.
Futures markets on the country’s richest restricted race are currently led by the Danny Bougoure-trained Brisbane based Snitzel filly Oakleigh Girl.
She won the Group 3 7News Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on debut on Melbourne Cup Day and races again as the odds-on favourite this Saturday in the $100,000 Listed Calaway Gal Plate (1200m) at Doomben.
Echo Gal meanwhile will next race in this year’s BJ McLachlan, also held at Doomben Racecourse, on December 28 as her final Magic Millions lead-up.
Driefontein, a $75,000 purchase who to date has won $1.69 million in prize money, is raced by Star Thoroughbred’s Denise Martin.
Martin also has Echo Gal on the books having secured her for $145,000 from the Magic Millions sales.
