Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Peter Moody-trained sprinter Flamberge will put their Standish Handicap 2014 claims on the line when they run down the Flemington straight this Saturday.
A four-year-old son of Exceed And Excel the gelding has had 11 starts for 10 top three finishes including four wins so far, two of which were down the straight six at Victoria’s premier course.
It’s a top record and one they will be out to add to when they run in the $80,000 Lanec Services Handicap (1000m) in Melbourne this weekend.
They’ve drawn wide for the handicap clash but will get some weight relief from their 59.5kg allocation with apprentice Jake Duffy to use their two kilo claim.
Runner-up to Sichuan Vigour in their only black type start to date, the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) at Flemington back in March, Flamberge comes off a first-up Caulfield win.
Carrying just 52kg in the Benchmark 90 over 1100m on November 30 they relished the light weight and enjoyed a confidence boosting victory to kick off their latest campaign.
If they perform well this weekend, Flamberge the $3.20 favourite to win through Ladbrokes.com.au, then it will be a New Year’s Day feature next-up for them.
Moody and co. are eyeing a start in the $150,000 Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) back at the track on January 1 for their maiden Group assignment.
“He would want to be running really well tomorrow to say we are on target for the Standish,” Moody’s racing manager Jeff O’Connor told AAP.
“We think he’s up to a Standish but you want to see him if not putting them away tomorrow, then at least having an excuse.”
He’s certainly bred to be competitive over the track and distance.
Their half-brother Sunburnt Land was a Listed Straight Six winner in 2008.
They went on to run third in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes behind Hot Danish and third again to Swick in the Group 1 VRC Classic over the 1200m at Flemington that year.
Curtana, Flaberge’s full sister, was also a dual Flemington black type winner and finished runner-up to Star Witness in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes back in 2010.
“David Moodie (owner) knows the family better than anyone and they love the straight,” O’Connor said.
“So we are happy to go there and target that race in a couple of weeks’ time, using this as a stepping stone race.
“But also it’s very suitable to give him another look down the straight before the stakes race.”
