2014 Kilmore Cup on the Cards for Freshwater Storm

Kilmore Cup 2014 in February is the long term summer aim for Tony Parker’s in-form grey Freshwater Storm who vies for their fourth win from five starts at Flemington this weekend.

Yet to be tested in black type company the One Cool Cat five-year-old races for the 25th time on Saturday in the $80,000 Dorevitch Pathology Handicap (1720m).

Drawn in gate eight of 13 with apprentice jockey Jye McNeil engaged for the ride, Freshwater Storm will drop down from 58kg to 55kg with the claim.

That’s half a kilo less than what they had on their back to win over 1700m at Caulfield a fortnight ago where they put an easy three lengths on their closest rival.

A disappointing Crown Oaks Day failure aside where they botched the jump in the Subzero Challenge, Freshwater Storm has won both their other starts this time in with earlier victories at Stawell and Caulfield in September and October respectively.

They will be looking to atone for the Flemington loss then when they return to the track on Saturday for just their second start at Victoria’s premier course.

While they don’t have experience at the track the bookies still have Freshwater Storm as the equal $5.50 favourite with the Robbie Griffiths-trained Chile Express.

It’s a deserving price accord to the Geelong-based Parker who knows over the distance his galloper is the one to beat.

“In Saturday’s race there should be plenty of pace and the main dangers, Chile Express and Stratigraphy, haven’t raced over the distance, so they will have to step up,” Parker told AAP.

“He’s going to be pretty hard to beat.”

If all goes to plan and they perform well this weekend then Parker will continue to prepare his horse for a shot at the $260,000 Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m) on Sunday February 23.

Saturday will be their final run this campaign however before they’re turned out for a brief one week let-up before being stepped up in class next year.
