2014 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Aim for The Bowler

A trip to the Gold Coast next month for a shot at the 2014 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas is on the cards for Tony Vasil’s young colt The Bowler.

A winner of two of their nine starts to date, the Testa Rossa three-year-old is set to return to racing at the end of the month as they gear up for the lucrative $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) in Queensland on January 11, 2014.

Tested at elite level just two runs into their career The Bowler was outclassed at Caulfield back in February when a distant 13th behind Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

They performed much better in Victoria during the winter when dropped back in class with back-ot-back wins to kick off their campaign.

Both of those were on Heavy (9) tracks giving the then juvenile a mudlark tag.

While they’ve failed to win a race since June, they have been competitive in a number of the subsequent starts.

One of their better runs since was a close second behind Honey Steel’s Gold at Flemington in the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final in July where they saw the mile for the first time.

In Melbourne during the spring they were well beaten in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) running 10th and the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) finishing ninth.

Their last start saw them carry a hefty 60kg to run fifth behind Tips And Beers in a Benchmark 78 over the Caulfield mile in mid-October.

Vasil sent them to the paddock after that run and has them back in work, alongside their 2014 Australian Guineas-bound stablemate Prince Harada, ahead of their first-up run on December 28.

The Bowler is likely to run in a 1200m Moonee Valley sprint that Saturday preparing for their Magic Millions assault.

A host of three-year-olds are now in work ahead of the Magic Millions Race Day’s Guineas including Tony McEvoy’s Sebring filly Bring A Ring who ran third at Rosehill as a $10 shot a fortnight ago.
