Zaratone Heads 2013 Razor Sharp Handicap Field

The in-form Zariz eight-year-old may be getting on in the years but the gallant grey continues to race like a horse half their age.

On Saturday Zaratone shoots for their second consecutive win when they take on a capacity field of rivals in the $100,000 Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1150m).

Run over 50 metres shorter than is tradition, and with the field capped at just 12 starters due to a track switch from the course proper at Randwick, this year’s Razor Sharp Handicap is shaping up as a hotly contested affair.

Zaratone was last seen defeating a similar class field by nearly two lengths in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) on November 30 at Rosehill.

While they have the ideal lead-up they will need to be at their best on Saturday however having drawn the extreme outside barrier 14, into 12 with the two emergencies Jacquinot Bay (barrier one) and Shelford (barrier six) coming out.

To help them do that will be jockey Kathy O’Hara returning from a race fall that left her concussed with a serious head injury.

O’Hara has partnered with Zaratone for all but two of their starts this year.

The association goes further back than that however as she often rode them when they were prepared in Canberra by Nick Olive including their two and a half length victory in last year’s Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1100m).

Also coming via a Starlight Stakes run two weeks back are runner-up Heart Testa, the third placed Safeguard and the Ron Quinton-trained Master Harry (4th) who will be second-up and on the improve on Saturday.

Drawn in gate five here with Jason Collett to ride, the Chris Waller-trained Heart Testa has run top three in all of their runs this season including two Rosehill wins.

Peter Snowden’s young Exceed And Excel colt Safeguard meanwhile is a dual Group 3 winner having won the Kindergarten Stakes in Sydney in April and the Vain Stakes at Caulfield this August.

They have plenty of promise and are racing well with the distance and track both set to suit.

Other notable hopes meanwhile include Peter Moody’s resuming Club Command last seen winning over 1400m at Flemington in June and the Kris Lees-trained Starlight Stakes sixth placed Uate drawn in the next two widest gates inside of Zaratone.
