Voleuse De Coeurs 2014 Australian Cup Bound

Irish St Leger winner Voleuse De Coeurs is preparing for an autumn return with the now Michael Moroney-trained import set to target the Australian Cup 2014 in March.

The talented Teofilo mare was formerly prepared by Dermot K Weld in Ireland where she enjoyed plenty of success including her six length romp to carry a hefty 61kg to victory in the Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) this September.

It was that effort that prompted her new connections at Eliza Park International to send her down under for a shot at the world’s richest handicap, the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) in November.

She jumped as a $16 shot in Flemington’s ‘race that stops a nation’ but from her wide draw (21 of 24) against a stellar field she could only manage to finish eight lengths away 10th to the Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite Fiorente.

Staying on in Australia under the care of Moroney, the five-year-old could get her chance to atone this Melbourne Festival of Racing.

Moroney has tentatively penciled in a first-up run in the $1 million Group 1 Darley Australian Cup (2000m) on March 8 at Flemington for Voleuse De Coeurs, which is also the race Fiorente is being set for this autumn.

Currently in the paddock at Victoria’s Eliza Park Stud, Voleuse De Coeurs has been confirmed as definitely resuming on Newmarket Handicap Day.

If not in the Australian Cup she will get an easier assignment in the $220,000 Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) depending on her work between now and then.

“She seems good,” Moroney told Racing Victoria earlier this week.

“She’s still out in the paddock but she comes back into work next week.

“She’s done really well. She was putting on weight while we had her in work and has continued to do so in the paddock.”

After Melbourne Voleuse De Coeurs will then head to Sydney for a shot at the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 5.
