This Sunday, December 15, Victoria’s outer city track at Werribee will host one of its premier races of the year with nominations now out for the Werribee Cup 2013.
There were a bumper number of early entries taken for this year’s edition of the $120,000 Listed TAB Werribee Cup (2600m), the dour staying test attracting a total of 19 nominees.
Heading the entries with a rating of 101 are the Darren Weir-trained Hurdy Gurdy Man and Tony McEvoy’s Pelicano.
Street Cry six-year-old Hurdy Gurdy Man is a Cups champ having won the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) back in February as well as the Murtoa Cup and Hamilton Cups this season.
Their last start was at Ballarat on November 24 where they had barrier 16 of 16 and a hefty 60kg in the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m).
The event was run in the mud on a Heavy (9) course and Hurdy Gurdy Man was severely hampered mid-race.
Despite all of that they still battled on for a brave third behind The Offer.
Pelicano meanwhile also comes via the Ballarat Cup, the Court Of Jewels five-year-old having finished second.
A multiple stakes winner thanks to wins including the Murray Bridge Gold Cup in October over the mile and the Listed Parramatta Cup (2000m) in March, Pelicano has the class but their form over this distance is a little suspect.
Last year they ran fifth in the Werribee Cup, albeit beaten under two lengths, an effort they’re out to improve on this year.
Also highly rated are the likes of nicely bred Torney Cup winner You Think So, the David Hayes-trained Ramsden Stakes winner over the two miles at Flemington Unchain My Heart, Sandown Cup third placegetter Crafty Cruiser and Mujadale.
There are only two last start winners nominated for the Werribee Cup this year with the Colin & Cindy Alderson-trained Leonardo Express who won over 2500m at Moonee Valley on November 29, and the flying Robert Smerdon-trained Spinderbella.
Spinning World mare Spinderbella is a lightly raced four-year-old who has won three of her five starts.
Those three wins have all been on the trot by big margins including her most recent, a four length effort over 2200m at Ballarat in the wet last month.
She’s now out to make it four straight, if accepted, and can handle any ground and the distance.
The Aldersons have also nominated for the in-form Suspended Gem who has run top two in their three latest starts.
Others coming off some nice recent form then include High Chaparral seven-year-old Handsome, Warrnambool galloper King Of Dudes and the Chris Waller-trained Thubiaan.
See below for the full list of Werribee Cup 2013 nominations and stay tuned for the final field out on Thursday.
