This Saturday in Brisbane Doomben Racecourse will host four black type races, one of which is the Phelan Ready Stakes 2013 for two-year-old colts and geldings.
Attracting a final field of 11 hopefuls, the $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1010m) is a nice starting point for promising juveniles heading towards some of the bigger races, possibly even those in Sydney and Melbourne, for their age during the autumn.
The race is named in honour of 2009 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Phelan Ready who took out that year’s Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in Sydney.
Incredibly the son of More Than Ready, now seven, hasn’t won a race since taking out the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
Of those 11 engaged in Saturday’s race six have had a previous start, including two who have also posted a maiden win.
Heading the field is the widely-drawn Vienna Royale for Tony Gollan with the outside barrier to overcome.
A winner on debut at the track back in December the Falvelon colt made an immediate impact when putting five and a half lengths on their closest rival.
That followed an equally impressive seven and a half length trial win at Doomben, the youngster out to continue that form on the weekend.
“We’ve had the Phelan Ready earmarked for him after his first start and he’s had a nice preparation leading into it,” Gollan said this week.
They are on way to the lucrative $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast next month and will be ridden by Michael Cahill in this important lead-up.
“He’s not completely bomb proof but he does have really good gate speed and he puts himself right up there which is a good asset for a two-year-old,” Gollan said, hoping that’s enough to see them overcome their wide draw.
“At his first start he wanted to get away from the rail down the straight. He’s still learning and has a long way to got but I’m pretty happy with him.”
The other horse already with a win behind them is then Liam Birchely’s Jet Spur gelding Waffle, also out wide in gate 10, who comes off a victory at Kilcoy just last Sunday.
Another with previous experience to look at is then Bruce Hill’s Eljetem who debuted with a good second behind Celestial Dragon in the wet here a fortnight ago over the 1100m.
Also in the mix then are the likes of Toowoomba galloper Flying Lucky who won a Gatton trial last week and the Gold Coast-based Bassillique who’s had two trials.
