2013 George Moore Stakes Results – Lucky Hussler Claims Second Group 3 Victory

Lucky Hussler only received a start in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday following the withdrawal of pre-race favourite Cape Kidnappers but took advantage of his opportunity to record his second victory at Group 3 level.

Lucky Hussler was returning to the races for the first time since he finished fifth in the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and fought home bravely to record a narrow victory over Morning Captain and Startsmeup in what was a blanket finish.

Jockey Jason Taylor was also returning to the races after a lengthy spell; with a nasty shoulder injury keeping the consistent rider out of saddle since April.

Taylor, who timed his run perfectly on the four-year-old, was riding Lucky Hussler for the first time but said he went into the Group 3 event confident that the son of Husson was good enough to defeat the strong field and claim victory.

“While I was on the sideline I took a lot of interest in his races through the winter carnival against some good quality opposition and he didn’t have a lot of luck a few times,” Taylor said after the race.

“With only 54kg on his back I thought he would be nice and fresh being first-up and with the speed in the race it looked a nice race for him.”

Taylor, who won the 2011 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on Sincero, admitted that he was worried his career may be over during the time he spent away from racing but is delighted to be back in the saddle and riding winners.

“I had to have major surgery and it was frustrating to be out of action for seven months,” Taylor said.

“For a brief time I wondered if I was going to make it back but I’ve had injuries before and been through long lay-offs so I knew what was in store.”

Lucky Hussler first made his mark by winning the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at Eagle Farm last summer and is expected to contest the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on December 21 before tackling the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 11.
