One of the three Mick Price-trained runners in Saturday’s Doveton Stakes 2013, Loveyamadly has opened top of the markets for the Caulfield feature.
Price plays a strong hand in this year’s edition of the $120,000 Listed PFD Food Services Doveton Stakes (1000m) saddling up three of the 10 final acceptors for the handicap clash.
The favourite of those, and of the entire field, is Bel Esprit mare Loveyamadly.
The five-year-old is first-up here, drawn in gate five with Dale Smith to ride, having run a disappointing eighth last time out.
That was back in mid-April at Morphettville in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) where she struggled at the new track.
Prior to that she was on fire winning four from five including the Listed Australia Abell Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in March.
Some argue she should have been unbeaten before the Adelaide trip too with her only loss being a nose away second to There’s Only One in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield from a wide draw in February.
Here she’ll be looking to bring her good form back and continue her nice first-up record.
The bookies rate her to do just that too with Loveyamadly paying $3.70 in the latest Doveton Stakes odds.
It’s a relatively open market too with four other single figure fancies including the $4.80 market mover Sumakaray.
Drawn ideally in gate two and getting in on the 54kg minimum the punters are starting to come for Brian Cox’s Wodonga-based four-year-old.
The Manner Hill mare has been matching it with the best of them over her latest prep including a good fourth to Dystophia in the Group 3 GH Mumm Stakes (1100m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Her latest effort was at Moonee Valley two weeks back when third, beaten under a length, in a 1200m handicap carrying a hefty 60kg.
On Saturday she drops back to just 54kg and it is that big weight advantage that has Cox high in confidence.
“At Moonee Valley she went well but the big weight beat her in the end,” he told AAP.
“You try to place your horses where they don’t have to carry a lot of weight.
“You never beat the handicapper but going from 60kg to 54kg is a very big drop.”
He’s also thrilled with her inside draw that should see her get the run of the race.
You’ve got to be happy with that – she just has to jump well and hold her position,” he said of the mare he plans to target the $120,000 Listed Christmas Stakes with back at the track on Boxing Day.
The others under $10 in the Doveton Stakes betting markets are then in-form God’s Own gelding Vatican ($5), the Anthony Freedman-trained Rescue Mission ($8), and the injury-prone Chase The Rainbow ($9) who is equal 60kg topweight with Vatican and who will be racing for the first time since September last year.
Following closely on $11 are then Flash Of Doubt and Halle Rocks drawn in gates three and 10 respectively.
