Local handler Shane Quilty is looking at a Perth Cup 2014 bid on New Year’s Day with his progressive mare Fancy Feet following her first-up Ascot win last weekend.
The four-year-old daughter of ill-fated American-bred stallion Fath posted her third career win from 14 starts on November 30 when defeating Ready On Time in a 1500m handicap for fillies and mares.
It was her first run in over eight months, and one that has Quilty confident of better things to come over the Perth Summer Racing Carnival whose dam Colourband is a half-sister to Group 3 Queensland Tattersalls Cup winner Captain Test.
Fancy Feet took 10 months and seven starts before she posted her maiden win at Bunbury last December.
Since then things have been a bit hit and miss with some below par runs including a 12th to Moreish in the Listed 1000 Guineas (1800m) in March.
She improved on that run a fortnight later however when stepped up in distance for the Listed Natasha Stakes (2200m) turning the tables on 1000 Guineas winner Moreish who played second fiddle in the rematch.
While she missed last year’s summer racing action due to injury, it looks all systems go for a campaign in the feature staying races this season.
“She fractured a shin a few days after the Natasha,” Quilty explained to Thoroughbred Breeders WA (TBWA).
“It’s been a long journey to get her back racing but she’s worth it.”
Fancy Feet was one of 42 nominations taken for the $500,000 Group 2 Golden River Developments Perth Cup (2400m) this week.
It’s a race that with the right lead-up and luck Fancy Feet can feature in according to Quilty after she showed a liking for longer distances in the Natasha Stakes during the autumn.
While admitting she’s probably another year off her peak, Quilty is likely to strike while the iron is hot and give her a go in the classic mile and a half this season.
“I will push her towards the Perth Cup,” Quilty said.
“She’s probably still a year away but if she’s knocking on the door, we will throw her in.”
