Flying three-year-old Petrol Power looks the one to beat in Saturday’s 2013 Lee Steere Classic, the Jim Taylor-trained youngster vying for their fourth career win.
One of the major support races on the Kingston Town Classic Day program in Perth this weekend, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic (1400m) is set to run as Ascot Race 4 at 2:40pm (local).
There are nine three-year-olds in the Lee Steere Classic field this year, the top rated of which is Petrol Power.
Drawn in gate seven with Jason Brown to ride the Snitzel gelding has been in top form this season with three top two black type finishes from as many starts.
After running second to Arcadia Rose in the Belgravia Stakes first-up in October they went up to 1400m for the Listed Fairetha Stakes where they were second again this time to Saint Bro.
Coming back in distance a fortnight later Petrol Power was last seen winning the Listed Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) on November 23 over Sujet, a performance they are looking to repeat on Saturday.
Simon Miller’s Placid Ark Stakes runner-up Sujet also backs up in the Lee Steere looking to turn the tables on their last start conqueror.
The Vital Equine gelding made their debut in the Placid Ark and should have improvement in them for their second run, the up-and-comer drawn nicely in gate three with Patrick Carbery to ride.
Placid Ark Stakes third placegetter Guardlock has also drawn nicely for the Lee Steere Classic, the Trevor Andrews-trained stablemate of the weekend’s Kingston Town Classic favourite Luckygray to get the rails run from barrier one.
Before their last start third the Dehere gelding enjoyed a win over the 1200m at Ascot when defeating Wanderlust on November 9.
The other more notable hopes in the race are then Neville Parnham’s last start winning Not A Single Doubt colt Crown Lawyer and Oratorio gelding Shades Of Rio, fifth in the Placid Arc two back, for Daniel Morton in gate two with William Pike engaged for the ride as they back up from a second at the track over 1500m just last Saturday.
