Kicking off the end-of-season features in Queensland for another summer, the $200,000 Group 3 Rawgroup Hospitality George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben Racecourse has this year drawn a field of 16 starters plus two emergencies.

Heading the George Moore Stakes field and weights with a big 60kg weight allocation is the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Famous Seamus.

The Elusive City five-year-old, winner of the Listed Lightning Handicap (1100m) at Randwick in October, comes off a third to Lankan Rupee in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1200m) from November 16.

There they carried 58.5kg and they are going to need to really improve on that to handle the extra weight on Saturday.

Famous Seamus also suffered a blow in the George Moore Stakes barrier draw having been allocated the far outside gate, 18 into 16.

They are followed in the weights then by Facile Tigre on 58kg who has come up with the inside alley for the weekend.

Due to be ridden by Larry Cassidy the Sunshine Coast-trained Catbird seven-year-old was runner-up in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) back in February but hasn’t won a race since November of 2011.

The next heaviest weighted on 57kg is then Kelly Doughty’s Morning Captain, one of the top chances in the race drawn in gate eight with Jim Byrne to ride.

Third in this race 12 months ago, the now five-year-old son of Danbird won at Eagle Farm two back over 1300m and ran a nice race last start in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) when a half length away third to Better Than Ready.

Also allocated 57kg is the reigning George Moore Stakes winner Startsmeup.

The Danzero gelding won the race last year under the training of Gillian Heinrich but is now prepared by Bruce Hill and is after their first win since.

Last year’s runner-up Phelan Ready is also back for another shot this year.

Jason McLachlan’s frustrating runner though has drawn barrier 17 and is out to break one of racing’s famous droughts not having won since their 2009 Golden Slipper success.

Other top chances that come via good lead-up form meanwhile include the Kelso Wood-trained Keith Noud runner-up Benny’s Buttons (barrier five) and recent Doomben winner Cape Kidnappers for Kelly Schweida in gate seven.

Other notable hopes include consistent seven-year-old Delgao Bolt for Deagon’s James Lyons, the resuming Tony Gollan-trained Gundy Son and Stuart Kendrick’s Doubtfilly in gate two who only ran last weekend when third at the track and distance in a fillies and mares’ black type.
