Doveton Stakes 2013 Field & Barriers

This Saturday in Melbourne the only stakes race on the program is the 2013 Doveton Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse, the final field and barrier draw for which is now out.

Set to run as the fifth race at 3:30pm (AEST) this year’s $120,000 Listed PFD Food Services Doveton Stakes (1000m) features a field of 10 short distance specialists.

Two share the 60kg top weight allocation with the Rick Hore-Lacy-trained Chase The Rainbow and Byron CozamanisVatican.

The injury-prone Chase The Rainbow has had their career restricted to just seven starts, four of which the five-year-old grey has won.

Their latest start was back in September last year, which they won, before another injury took them off the racing scene again.

All reports are that they’ve made a full recovery and are set to strut their stuff this coming summer – autumn campaign.

Despite being accepted for Saturday however, their trainer has confirmed they could still be scratched and saved for the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day.

Local God’s Own gelding Vatican meanwhile has been in top form this prep running top four in all four of their starts since a first-up win at Moonee Valley in September.

That day they carried 60kg, and they had the big weigh on their back again last start when second to Esprit De Bullet over the 1000m at the Valley on November 23.

Other runners set to resume racing in the Doveton this year include 53-start veteran nine-year-old Zedi Knight, Mick Price’s stakes winning Bel Esprit mare Loveyamadly and Rescue Mission for Anthony Freedman with form in Darwin from last season.

Of those who are not first-up the other main chances look to be the consistent Brian Cox-trained Manner Hill mare Sumakaray drawn nicely in barrier two and Price’s Halle Rocks to be ridden by Melbourne Cup winning hoop Damien Oliver from the far outside barrier.

Price will also be represented at the other end of the field in gate one by his third acceptor Vicario who hasn’t run since their disappointing ninth at Moonee Valley behind Henwood back on August 3.

The complete Doveton Stakes 2013 field, barriers, jockeys and weights are listed in the table below.
