43 Perth Cup 2014 Nominations Taken

The countdown is on until the big New Year’s Day race in WA with the 2014 Perth Cup nominations released by Racing and Waging Western Australia (RWWA) this week.

A total of 43 staying types are entered for this summer’s $500,000 Group 2 Golden River Developments Perth Cup (2400m) including many of the big name players for the Group 1 race happening this weekend.

Ascot Racecourse is set to host on Saturday the final elite level of the year, the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), and many of the top horses there are also among the Perth Cup nominations for January 1.

Kingston Town Classic hopes that are set to stay on for a Perth Cup bid over the mile and a half include this year’s Perth Cup runner-up Mr Moet, dual Kingston Town Classic winner Playing God who was a disappointing 14th in the latest Perth Cup, the Grant Williams-trained Ranger and recent Carbine Club of WA Stakes winning mare Elite Belle also prepared by Williams.

Williams in fact has a strong presence with four entries.

His others are Ascot Gold Cup winning Catbird mare Moonlight Bay and True Gold.

The reigning Perth Cup winner Talent Show is also nominated for the next edition of the staying classic, Graeme Ballantyne’s Jeune mare after her first win since.

As well as the aforementioned runner-up Mr Moet, last season’s Perth Cup third placegetter Global Flirt and fourth placed Pop Culture are also set for another go in 2014.

Some of the other highly rated local hopes in the mix then include Strickland Stakes winner from the winter Kincaple, last start Tattersall’s Cup champion Black Tycoon and Blackfriars five-year-old Rohan.

While it is shaping up as a predominantly local affair, there are a couple of notable interstate raiders nominated for the Perth Cup in January.

Rosehill’s Gerald Ryan has entered the OTI-owned French import Martinvast while Melbourne Cup winning trainer Gai Waterhouse has Travolta in the mix.

Handsome Ransom five-year-old Travolta, formerly prepared in New Zealand as a three-year-old, broke their black type maiden last Saturday in Sydney.

Second-up for the season they thrived over 2000m and posted a big two and a half length victory over Hoylonny in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) giving Waterhouse confidence in a possible Perth Cup 2014 bid with the progressive stayer.
