2013 CB Cox Stakes Nominations Feature Travolta

Self-declared ‘Cups Queen’ Gai Waterhouse has her eyes on the Perth Summer Racing Carnival riches this season having nominated her last start Sydney winner Travolta for the CB Cox Stakes 2013 and the Perth Cup 2014.

A total of 24 gallopers were nominated for the $250,000 Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes (2100m) which is set to run as Ascot Racecourse on Saturday December 21.

Won 12 months ago by the Adam Durrant-trained local Mr Moet, who came off a first-up win in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and a second to Luckygray in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), this year’s CB Cox Stakes is set to have an interstate presence.

Raiding the race and out to steal the trophy from the locals is Waterhouse’s New Zealand-bred Handsome Ransom five-year-old Travolta.

The gelding enjoyed their first major stakes win just last Saturday at Rosehill when defeating Hoylonny by an easy two and a half lengths in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m).

Now they could be west bound for the CB Cox Stakes followed by a shot at the $400,000 Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) back at the track over the mile and a half on New Year’s Day.

“The Perth races came on to the radar for Travolta after he won on Saturday,” Waterhouse told The West Australian.

“He has pulled up in good order and we will discuss further with the owners about him going to Perth.

“The stake money is excellent there, but there are also two races here in Sydney for lesser money.”

Those Sydney races are the $100,000 Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) Saturday week followed by Boxing Day’s $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick.

The CB Cox Stakes is the traditional Perth Cup lead-up and last year’s winner Mr Moet went on to run second to Talent Show in the January 1st classic.

Mr Moet is again in the CB Cox Stakes and Perth Cup mix nominated for both races, as is the reigning Perth Cup champ Talent Show, fourth in last year’s race before their Cup success, who hasn’t won a race since the start of the year.

The horse that ran third behind Durrant’s CB Cox Stakes quinella, Chester Road in second, last year is also back for another shot in 2013 with the Grant Williams-trained Ranger.

The now seven-year-old Testa Rossa gelding has had a number of nice runs over the year and was most recently seen running a quarter length away third in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) at Ascot on November 9.

Clear favourite for the Kingston Town Classic this weekend, the Trevor Andrews-trained Luckygray, is also nominated for the Cox Stakes – Perth Cup double after winning the Railway Stakes in fine style with a big weight last start.

Dual Kingston Town Classic winner Playing God is another CB Cox Stakes hope running this Saturday, Neville Parnham’s stable star looking to hit peak form as they get up to the 1800m on the weekend.

All the rest of the usual suspects are there in the CB Cox Stakes nominations, the vast majority also entered for the Perth Cup, including the Mike Reed-trained Kincaple and Parnham’s other hope God Has Spoken.
