Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday the first of the Brisbane summer Group races will take place at Doomben Racecourse with nominations now out for the George Moore Stakes 2013.
Won 12 months ago by the Gillian Heinrich-trained Startsmeup, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) has attracted 24 nominations.
Among them is one from last year’s winning trainer.
The Gold Coast-based Heinrich will attempt to secure back-to-back George Moore trophies this year with Bel Esprit six-year-old Audacious Spirit who hasn’t won a race since the Lough Neagh Stakes at the track last December.
There are plenty of other talented Queenslanders in the mix however including the Kelso Wood-trained Benny’s Buttons.
The Refuse To Bend six-year-old, who handles all ground including Heavy-rated tracks, resumed on November 23 and ran a brave second from a wide barrier to Better Than Ready in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m).
Also coming via the Keith Noud Handicap is the Kelly Doughty-trained third placed Morning Captain.
In flying form the Danbird gelding has run top three in all four of their runs this season including a good victory over Listen Son at Eagle Farm over 1300m last month.
They were third in the race last year and are joined in the nominations by the 2012 George Moore runner-up Phelan Ready who hasn’t won a race since the 2009 Golden Slipper.
Along with Benny’s Buttons the Eagle Farm-based Wood has also nominated for eight-year-old Firebolt, Seek And Find who has run second over the 1000m at Eagle Farm in their two most recent runs and the winter’s Glasshouse Handicap winner Someday.
Another local trainer win a good chance on Saturday is Kelly Schweida with Commands six-year-old Cape Kidnappers who resumed with a Doomben win in a Class 6 in October.
Cape Kidnappers was last seen racing in Sydney at Rosehill on November 16 where they were far from disgraced in a benchmark 85 running second behind Heart Testa.
The Chris Waller-trained Heart Testa backed up at the track last weekend running second behind Zaratone, third in the November 16 race, in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m).
A George Moore Stakes nominee that ran on the weekend meanwhile was Stuart Kendrick’s stakes winning Not A Single Doubt mare Doubtfilly.
The four-year-old was second-up at Doomben and ran a good third to Lady Echelon in the mud in the Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m).
Other notable hopes then include James Lyons’ in-form veteran Delago Bolt who ran fourth in a Listed Flemington feature on Crown Oaks Day, Group performing Hawkesbury visitor Famous Seamus, Tony Gollan’s resuming Gundy Son, last start Eagle Farm winner from Toowoomba Love Rocks and this year’s Queensland Guineas third placegetter Lucky Hussler.
