Vital Kingston Town Classic Day 2013 Target

Ben Pearce’s smart three-year-old Vital Edition is set for a black type assignment on 2013 Kingston Town Classic Day at Ascot Racecourse Saturday week after a win at Perth’s premier track on Wednesday.

The Vital Equine gelding improved on their last start fifth over 1200m, relishing a step up in distance to win the $20,000 Westspeed 3YO 1 Maiden Win Handicap (1500m) by one and a half lengths over the odds-on $1.80 favourite Cut Snake.

It was their first win since they broke their maiden status over 1650m at Belmont Park during the winter, and one that has connections eyeing a shot at the $80,000 Listed Aquanita Stakes (1800m) on December 7.

Shaping up as a young staying type to watch, Vital Edition will be given their chance to prove themselves against stakes company in the Aquanita Stakes where jockey Paul Harvey is likely to retain the ride.

Harvey now has a flawless record aboard the youngster having also ridden them for their first turf triumph before successfully reuniting with them this week when replacing Jarrad Noske for the ride.

It was Harvey’s cool head and ability to read the race on Wednesday that got Vital Edition home.

He took the youngster straight to the front early but allowed Air Colorado to pass them and take over the lead with around 700m left to travel.

Not panicking, Harvey and Vital Edition fought back and regained the lead with the wide travelling favourite Cut Snake moving up beside them on the home straight.

But the eventual winner held on and pulled out a strong late burst to win by one and three quarter lengths in a decisive effort.

“It was a top ride and it’s always an advantage having Paul on,” Pearce told The West Australian.

Their performance there will then help determine future racing plans and targets for them over the coming months.

Pearce though is hoping they develop into a genuine contender for the lucrative $400,000 Group 2 W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) at Ascot on April 12, 2014.

To get there he’s likely to back Vital Edition up from the Aquanita Stakes in the $100,000 Listed WA St Leger (2100m) on December 21.

“Every time I work him at home I say ‘I can’t wait to get him up over 2000 metres’,” Pearce said.

“I think the best is yet to come.”

Also 2013 Aquanita Stakes bound is last weekend’s beaten WA Guineas favourite Vitello for Melbourne Cup winning Sydney based trainer Gai Waterhouse.
