Starlight Stakes 2013 Betting Tips

This Saturday in Sydney a quality eight race program featuring a number of early summer racing lead ups will light up Rosehill Gardens Racecourse including the 2013 Starlight Stakes– betting tips for which are listed below.

Running as the seventh race on the card with a start time scheduled for 4:47pm (AEST), the $100,000 Listed Blackwoods Alemlube Starlight Stakes (1100m) features a 10-horse field of sprinters the favourite being Heart Testa.

On the rails with gate one and Jason Collett to ride, the Chris Waller-trained four-year-old shoots for back-to-back wins having won over the track and distance on November 16.

For that run they carried 57kg and they drop half a kilo on Saturday.

They pay $2.80 to salute for the punters and are joined in the Starlight Stakes odds by three other single figure chances.

The others under $10 in the current markets are the Peter Snowden-trained Safeguard ($4.40), last start Rosehill winner Hidden Warrior ($5.50) and 2011 Starlight Stakes winner Zaratone ($6.50).

So should you stick to the single figure chances? Or is there more value to be found further down the markets from the likes of the returning Uate ($14) or even Magic Albert six-year-old Master Harry ($16) who is also first-up here?

#3 Zaratone ($6.50)

Won this race two years ago and think they’re approaching the same winning form this year. Improved on a first-up fifth to carrying a big 60.5kg to run third over this track and distance on November 16 behind Heart Testa, favourite for the Starlight, who had 57kg. For the rematch Zaratone goes down to 58kg while Heart Testa only drops to 56.5kg so think that evens things up plenty. This horse also loves the 1100m at Rosehill, also won a benchmark 95 in July, and if they can hang onto the lead they’re likely to have early they’ll be the one to beat third-up and fitter.

#4 Heart Testa ($2.80)

Deserving favourite will put in a fight but think Zaratone will just have the edge. Didn’t have the best run last start and still hung on to win by a long neck which took guts. Also won at the track and distance in September so they look really comfortable here. Should get the spot they want from the inside alley, Waller is on fire and consistent record of six wins from a dozen starts. Will be close.

#7 Safeguard ($4.40)

Punters have been frustrated with Snowden’s Exceed And Excel colt who has gone down beaten favourite in their past three starts since a first-up win over the 1100m at Caulfield in August. Came close when a length away fourth in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes next run at Flemington, second in the Blue Sapphire over 1200m back at Caulfield then last start sixth on Crown Oaks Day over 1000m from a wide barrier (14 of 14) last start. Similar class here in Sydney, extra 100m will suit and will love barrier seven. Dual Group 3 winner over the distance too, one at Randwick (Kindergarten Stakes) in April and the other (Vain Stakes) in the aforementioned first-up victory.
