The bookies are willing to forgive the Liam Birchley-trained Liesele their unplaced run in Melbourne last start and have the mare tipped as the one to beat in Saturday’s Travel Associates Classic 2013 back home in Brisbane.
There’s been plenty of money to suggest Liesele can bounce back to her black type winning form when she runs at Doomben jumping favourite in the $80,000 Listed Travel Associates Classic Fillies and Mares Plate (1200m) this weekend.
A six-year-old daughter of Exceed And Excel, Liesele enjoyed a first-up win this spring at Caulfield in the Listed Alinghi Stakes (1100m).
She turned out to be one of the horses that couldn’t handle the Flemington straight next start however when she ran a disappointing seventh to Dystopia in the Group 3 GH Mumm Stakes (1100m) last time out on November 7.
Now she returns home to Brisbane for a shot at another black type win and, drawn nincely in gate five with Glen Colless to ride, sits top of the current markets at a quote of $3.30.
It’s a fairly wide open Travel Associates Classic betting market this year too with four of the other 11 fillies and mares in the mix also under double figures.
The other top fancies under $10 to defeat Liesele are then:
- #9 Words Are Weapons ($4.80) – Sam Kavanagh-trained Sydney mare, the Dubawi four-year-old comes off a third over 1000m in a benchmark 85 at Rosehill, need to handle a distance increase here which they haven’t gone to before, consistent with three wins from six starts so far, should handle the class, distance will be the key
- #3 Discreet ($5) – Local Kelly Schweida-prepared hope who hasn’t raced since the winter, the daughter of Show A Heart was a winner over the track and distance carrying 58kg as s three-year-old last run in July during an excellent campaign, she’s had quite a break and makes her 4YO debut in this carrying a manageable 56.5kg but has barrier 11 (of 12) against her first-up
- #10 Lady Echelon ($7.50) – Rails run for the resuming Sunshine Coast grey, like Discreet their last run was a victory but back in July, fourth in the Sunshine Coast Guineas their latest four runs have all been over the mile which looks the Top Echelon grey’s best distance, first-up however 1200m should be okay and she’s got great form in the mud so if it’s raining in Brisbane expect a good run
- #1 Doubtfilly ($8.50) – Carries the 58.5kg topweight so gives away a minimum two kilos to her rivals but has class, the Not A Single Doubt four-year-old is also prepared on the Sunshine Coast but has done much of their racing in Brisbane, winner of the Ascot Handicap during the winter and returned on November 9 with a fifth over 100m, step up in distance second-up suits and they will have improved
Also in the mix at more generous odds are then the likes of the Bryan Guy-trained Jacquetta ($12) and Sue Grills’ Tamworth visitor Darcey ($13) who vies for their third consecutive victory.
