One of the Rosehill majors running in Sydney this weekend, the 2013 ATC Cup is down to just eight contenders following two early withdrawals including the early favourite Sysmo.
The Patrick Payne-trained Fieldmaster and Tony McEvoy’s Hobart Cup hope Sysmo have both officially been scratched from this year’s $100,000 Listed ATC Cup (2000m).
The withdrawal of four-year-old Sysmo, winner of the Seymour Cup two back, is of particular note as they were leading ATC Cup betting markets paying around $5 before the scratching.
ATC Cup odds are now led by the rails-drawn Travolta at $4.60, the Gai Waterhouse-trained galloper coming off a first-up eighth to Festival Stakes hope Ninth Legion at the track a fortnight ago.
It’s shaping up as anyone’s race however with all the runners at $14 or below.
Second pick is the Chris Waller-trained Secessio at $4.80 followed closely by their stablemates Hoylonny and Permit at $5 who ran 1st and second respectively ahead of the third placed Secessio over 1900m at Rosehill last time out.

#5 Travaolta ($4.60)
Was our pick of the pack even before the Sysmo scratching. Ignore the eight last start as that was over an unsuitably short distance. They are going to be fitter here and stepping up in distance is going to work in their favour. Back in August they carried 60kg to run second at Rosehill over 2000m and only have 56kg aboard on Saturday. Also carried 61kg to run second over 2200m in stakes company last prep and Rosehill record is also a beauty. They’ll go forward and set the pace and are going to be hard to run down.
#4 Secessio ($4.80)
Think the order of the odds as they sit now is right with Secessio, one of three Chris Waller-trained hopes in the race, to make a tight finish of this. Last start they ran third to stablemate Hoylonny in a 1900m handicap at the track and going up to 2000m is going to suit as they won over 2400m here during the winter by an easy two lengths when carrying 58kg. Here they carry 56.5kg and so have the weight advantage over Hoylonny (57kg). Going to be up there on pace with Travolta and probably just nudged out in the final few strides.
#3 Hoylonny ($5)
Can’t leave Hoylonny out of this after their impressive return to form over 100m less at this track on November 16. That was their first run in over a month and they showed a really nice improvement they’ll be looking to continue at a track that they, until more recently, had an ultra-impressive record at.
