It’s a market that’s near impossible to split with five of the 10 horses in the ATC Cup 2013 field fighting for favouritism, Sysmo narrowly winning the betting battle.
Running as Rosehill Gardens Race 4 at 3:02pm (AEST) this year’s $100,000 Listed ATC Cup (2000m) is shaping up as the tightest edition in many years.
The bookies are having a hard time separating the top fancies but have the Tony McEvoy-trained Sysmo just ahead at a quote of $5.
Drawn in gate four with James McDonald to ride the My Risk five-year-old won the Seymour Cup two back and is looking to return to winning form here.
Last start on November 9 at Flemington’s Emirates Stakes Day they finished a brave third to Post D’France in another mile showdown, and are sure to appreciate the step up in distance this weekend.
For their last start the gelding carried 58kg and had barrier 10 of 11 making their assignment from an inside alley with only 55.5kg on their back here a much more manageable one.
Following Sysmo in the ATC Cup odds are then four chances all at an equal quote of $6 with:
- #2 Permit – Chris Waller-trained seven-year-old last seen running a brave second as a $31 outsider to fellow ATC Cup hope Hoylonny in a 1900m handicap at Rosehill on November 16, has form around some of the best in the business in past seasons and is considered a much better chance for the rematch here
- #3 Hoylonny – Permit’s last start conqueror had terrible form earlier in the season finished dead last in their opening two runs but showed improvement when jumped up in distance last start, now seek back-to-backs at the track and with a good run can handle this class or rivals
- #4 Secessio – Another Waller hopeful, this British galloper won back-to-back at Rosehill in Jkuly and then first-up in November over 2400m and 1500m respectively so likes the track, genuine staying type that will enjoy the 2000m third-up here after a third to Hoylonny and Permit last start, think they’ve got upside for this especially as they drop a kilo while Hoylonny goes up in weight
- #5 Travolta – Gai Waterhouse-trained Handsome Ransom gelding has to improve on their last start eighth at the track two weeks back to Festival Stakes hope Ninth Legion over the 1350m, they’ll do that however as that distance was too short and their form over more is far more impressive, second over the 2000m here with 60kg in August, stakes form too and last run of last prep was 2200m second with 61kg, distance suits, they love the track and carrying only 56kg from gate one is surely a major danger
Also in the mix are the likes of Fulgur ($10) and veteran Zabeel gelding Maluckyday ($11), 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up, who are the best fancied of the double figure chances.
