Four for Waller in ATC Cup 2013 Field

Sydney’s leading horseman Chris Waller has a stranglehold over the 2013 ATC Cup field at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday following the acceptances for the weekend.

The New Zealand-born horseman who has thrice claimed the Sydney Trainers’ Premiership title has accepted for four of the 10 gallopers facing off in this year’s $100,000 Listed Blackwoods Uvex Safety ATC Cup (2000m).

Set to run as Rosehill Race 4 at 3:02pm (AEST) as one of three black types at the end-of-season meeting, the ATC Cup is shaping up as a decent edition.

Waller prepares the sole last start winner in the field too with Hoylonny in barrier nine.

The Lonhro five-year-old had a disappointing spring carnival before breaking a 13 month winning drought at Rosehill on November 16 with their victory over stablemate Permit in an open 1900m handicap.

Also drawn wide in the ATC Cup barriers runner-up in that race Permit, the Hugh Bowman mount in the far outside gate.

The Dansili six-year-old is looking to break their own losing spell not having won a race since the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) in April last year.

They were a hot favourite to win the Sydney Cup in 2012 next start after that but failed to finish in a horror result.

While their form has been hit and miss since, they’re a chance for the ATC Cup as they go up to the 2000m.

Waller’s two remaining chances are then High Chaparral six-year-old Fulgur (barrier five) who defeated Illo over the 1800m here during the winter and the in-form Secessio.

Set to jump from gate six with Christian Reith in the saddle, four-year-old Secessio has already had 19 starts with thei opening six of those being in their native Germany.

For Waller in Australia, for whom they’ve raced since mid-2012, they’ve yet to be given a black type chance.

After a solid third to Hoylonny in an all Waller-trained trifecta two weeks’ back however they’ll be stepped up to their first stakes race on Aussie soil.

The ATC Cup field and weights meanwhile are topped by Joe Pride’s former top stayer Maluckyday with 59kg.

A seven-year-old son of Zabeel, in their prime Maluckyday ran second to the French-trained raider Americain in the 2010 Melbourne Cup.

They were also competitive in a number of autumn features this year, but are out to improve on a last start seventh over 1500m here from November 2 behind Secessio.

The other big name hope is then Sysmo for South Australia’s Tony McEvoy who will jump from barrier four with Kiwi expat James McDonald aboard.

An imported My Risk four-year-old, Sysmo won the Seymour Cup over the mile last month and is on trial for some autumn Group 1 assignments next month.
