One of the country’s premier trainers of juveniles, Peter Snowden has confirmed 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes ambitions for his exciting young filly Earthquake.
Snowden, who will disassociate himself from Darley Australia at the end of next year’s autumn carnival, most recently won the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival’s premier two-year-olds’ race with super colt Sepoy in 2011.
Now he will shoot for his second win in four year’s aiming his Exceed And Excel filly Earthquake at the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), running at Caulfield on February 22, this coming summer.
There were 501 first acceptances taken for the 44th edition of the Blue Diamond Stakes last week including 25 for Snowden.
Headlining Snowden’s early Blue Diamond contingent, Earthquake has had one run for one win to date.
After an eye-catching three length trail win over 900m at Rosehill in late October she debuted at Randwick on November 9.
Ridden by Christian Reith Earthquake scored an easy maiden win beating her rivals by a minimum two and a half lengths in the $85,000 Colin Pearce 100th Plate (1000m).
“She was bombproof at her first start and she did everything you would want to see from a two-year-old having her first start,” Snowden told Sky Racing’s Racing Retro on Sunday.
Now Snowden is mapping out her road to the Blue Diamond, which could subsequently be followed by a shot at the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in Sydney on April 5 – a double Sepoy achieved in his juvenile year.
He said her likely first-up option would be in one of the traditional lead-up races, either the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on January 25 or the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) a fortnight later.
“I think she’s pretty much what I need for the Diamond,” Snowden said.
“She’s quite a precocious filly and she’s quite athletic.
“She’s had two weeks in the paddock and I’m bringing her back in tomorrow (Monday) at the farm where she’ll have a week on the water walker and then come to the stable where we’ll have plenty of time to ease her into a Blue Diamond Preview or Prelude.
“Whether we give her two lead up runs (into the Blue Diamond) or one we’ll decide when she comes back in work but I think she’s tailor made for a race like the Diamond.”
Snowden won this year’s Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude with another daughter of Exceed And Excel, Guelph.
She went on to finish a disappointing ninth in the Blue Diamond that year after jumping awkwardly and running wide throughout.
Since then however Guelph has scored an incredible four Group 1 victories most recently winning the Thousand Guineas in mid-October.
