2013 Western Australian Guineas Results – Ihtsahymn Wins For Kersley

Classy gelding Ihtsahymn has given legendary Perth trainer Fred Kersley another big win by flashing down the outside to score the Group 2 Western Australian Guineas (1600m) at Ascot this afternoon.

Ihtsahymn looked as though he was no hope with less than 200 metres left to run but after finding clear running he jumped out of the ground to fly past the Simon Miller-trained duo of Miss Rose De Lago and Sweet Bro to claim an impressive victory.

Kersley set the three-year-old for the Western Australian Guineas after he won the Westspeed Nursery Handicap (1600m) at Belmont Park earlier this year as a three-year-old and said that he was always confident that Ihtsahymn would improve when stepped up in trip.

“He has been unlucky this time in and in the shorter races he has been caught in traffic,” Kersley said.

“He is probably still in development, he is a tall horse that doesn’t handle the hustle and bustle, but once he gets into the clear he is a very good horse.

“He was in a lot of traffic and a lot of trouble for most of the race.

“He really didn’t get a clear run until 150 out and I thought that it was too late to be honest and I thought that he was giving them too much start.

“His strength came to the fore in the end and his finishing effort was great.”

Owner Neville Duncan won the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), two Cox Plates (2400m) and a number of other Group 1 events with Northerly but was clearly delighted that the plan to set Ihtsahymn for the W.A. Guineas had paid off in such emphatic fashion.

“It is a fantastic thrill,” Duncan said after the race.

“We set him for this race after his 1600 metre race six months ago, we had a lot of doubters, and in the run today he was clattered up and that wasn’t good.

“He is looking for 2000, we thought that 1600 metres might be too short, but that is what helped him today.”

Ihtsahymn will likely get a chance over even more distance in the Listed Aquanita Stakes (1800m) at Ascot in a fortnight’s time.
