2013 Railway Stakes Results – Luckygray Completes Massive Form Turn Around

Luckygray has completed a remarkable form turn around to carry the top-weight of 58kg to victory in the 2013 Railway Stakes(1600m) at Ascot this afternoon.

Luckygray returned to his best form with his second win in the Railway Stakes at Ascot this afternoon.

Luckygray finished outside the placings in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m), Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival but returned to his best form with a fast-finishing victory this afternoon.

Jockey Shaun O’Donnell has partnered Luckygray in all three of his Group 1 wins and has been one of the few people that had not written off the son of Bradbury’s Luck heading into the $1 million race this weekend.

O’Donnell timed his run on the six-year-old to the second in the Railway Stakes, flying down the outside late to catch Platinum Rocker and Fire Up Fifi just before the finishing post, and was clearly delighted to have scored another major win on a horse that means  so much to him.

“This feeling is unbelievable; he is a freak this horse I love him,” O’Donnell said after the race.

“I have never lost faith in this horse; unfortunately they didn’t see the best of him over there but what champions do is come home and win.

“I think that it is about 40 years since something like this has happened and trust him to be the horse to do it.”

Luckygray was having just his second start for Trevor Andrews, after previously being prepared by Gino Portelli in Perth and Robert Smerdon in Melbourne, and the trainer admitted that he thought it would be a lose-lose situation with the six-year-old.

“I was on a hiding to nothing; if he succeeded than good luck to you but if you failed the horse was probably tired and you should have spelled him so it is very gratifying,” Andrews said.

“I was happy to roll forward and let today tell me.

“This is my second one (previously winning with Modem in 2004) and to win a Group 1 is beautiful; we don’t have many of them.”

Luckygray is expected to push on to the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot on December 7 and will have the opportunity to become the first horse since Sniper’s Bullet in 2009 to complete the Railway Stakes/Kingston Town Classic double and join the likes of Playing God, Old Comrade and Summer Beau as back-back winners of the $500,000 event.

The Kingston Town Classic is only two weeks away and you can find the best odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
