Weekend Shadow Set To Strike in 2013 WA Guineas

They may be one of the roughie tips in the WA Guineas 2013 this weekend, but Weekend Shadow has what it takes to surprise their rivals according to trainer Neville Parnham.

One of the major races on a bumper Railway Stakes Day program at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, this year’s $400,000 Group 2 W.A. Guineas (1600m) originally attracted an above capacity field.

The emergency runner Hudson River however gained a start when local trainer Jim Taylor withdrew the widely-drawn Petrol Power who will instead race in the $100,000 Listed Placid Arc Stakes (1200m).

The other notable withdrawal from the WA Guineas field leaving 15 contenders was the Parnham-trained Via Laurentina last seen running second to Miss Rose De Lago in the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) just last Saturday.

Parnham though will still be dually represented in the three-year-olds classic by Vital Importance (into barrier 10) and Weekend Shadow with the rails run from barrier one.

WA Guineas betting is led by WA Champion Fillies Stakes winner Miss Rose De Lago ($3.30) followed by her stablemate, the fellow Simon Miller-trained Saint Bro ($5.50).

The best fancied of Parnham’s duo meanwhile is Weekend Shadow at $21; Champion Fillies fourth placed Vital Importance pays $51.

“Vital Importance has been a little disappointing but I’ve given her a change of routine and her work since suggests she is not far off the mark,” Parnham told Racing and Wagering WA.

While they are far from a top fancy in the markets, Bernardini colt Weekend Shadow is the one most likely to improve and has genuine claims according to Parnahm.

Their last start was a 10th to Saint Bro when beaten four lengths in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m).

It was a run that was better than it looked on paper however and one that gave their trainer confidence for a shot at the Guineas.

“I think he is the sleeper,” Parnham said.

“He will get a soft run and if you look at the replays there weren’t too many better runs in the Fairetha.

“Don’t be surprised if he is not about the place in the finish.”
