While the odds on the top five chances for Saturday’s Winterbottom Stakes 2013 in Perth have remained steady over the week, there has been steady money coming for Power Princess bringing the price in on Simon Miller’s veteran mare.
The first of two Group 1 Ascot races running in WA this weekend, the $500,000 Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) field is full of talent with 13 runners led by Rob Heathcote’s dual elite level champ Buffering.
Backing up from wins in the Manikato Stakes and VRC Sprint Classic in Melbourne the Mossman six-year-old is after their third Group 1 trophy on the trot.
Their ace form in Victoria this spring has Buffering sitting top of the Winterbottom Stakes odds, albeit at an easing price of $2.20 out from $2.10.
Buffering’s regular rider Damian Browne is over for the ride, his first in Perth, and believes his mount is definitely the one to beat.
“He’s enjoying his racing and thriving,” Browne told AAP.
“The horse has got the confidence from putting back-to-back wins together which is a big thing.”
There are then three other single figure fancies, the prices for which remain unchanged since Winterbottom Stakes betting markets opened on the final field at the start of the week.
Second fancy at $4.40 is the reigning Winterbottom champ Barakey who is unbeaten in 12 Perth runs, their only loss being in the Newmarket Handicap during a failed autumn raid when they fractured their knee.
Tony Gollan’s rock-hard-fit Queensland Spirit Of Boom and the Peter Moody-trained former Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Moment Of Change, third in the VRC Sprint Classic on November 9, then follow at an unfaltering $7.50.
The next line of betting then is occupied by the Railway Stakes market mover Power Princess.
Installed as a $12 fancy earlier in the week the super consistent Marwina seven-year-old is now at $10 to win their maiden Group 1.
She came devastatingly close 12 months ago in the same race when second, beaten just half a length, by Barakey in the 2012 Winterbottom Stakes result.
She’s won two of her three runs since, most recent in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) back in May.
Having spent more than 10 of the past 12 months on the sidelines, Power Princess showed she was ready to be competitive again this Perth Summer Racing Carnival when runner a first-up second to Barakey in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) on October 26.
Only a nostril flare separated the pair that day and Power Princess has her first run since this weekend as does the Jim Taylor-trained Key Business six-year-old Barakey.
