Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
A bumper nine-race program is scheduled for Railway Stakes Day at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse this weekend including the WA Guineas 2013 – betting tips and exotic selections for which are detailed below.
Running as Race 6 at 3:20pm (AEST), this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Sky Racing W.A. Guineas (1600m) boasts a smart field of 15 three-year-olds.
There have already been two early scratchings with #2 Petrol Power (14) and #16 Via Laurentina (17) coming out due to wide draws.
That has paved the way for the emergency in the field, Hudson River, to gain a run.
WA Guineas odds meanwhile are firmly led by Miss Rose De Lago ($3.30), Simon Miller’s in-form Encosta De Lago filly vying for her third black type on the trot.
She was last seen taking out the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) and will now step out against the boys from barrier 12 on Saturday.
She’s followed in the WA Guineas betting markets by her undefeated stablemate Saint Bro, the Flying Pegasus gelding last seen defeating a number of these same horses in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) on November 9.
The only other runner under double figures is then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vitello ($5.50) in gate three with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver in the saddle, the Snitzel colt coming off an 1800m win at Randwick.
So are these three the ones you should lock into the WA Guineas trifecta at Ladbrokes.com.au?
Or should you be looking further down the markets at a longer priced hope with claims for an upset WA Guineas result such as Fred Kersley’s big market mover Ihtsahymn ($11) looking to improve on their Fairetha Stakes sixth or Run For Run ($11)?
#9 Vitello ($5.50)
Think this Sydneysider will have the local hopes in Perth covered. Waterhouse and Oliver won the Melbourne Cup and now they make a raid in WA for the summer. Barrier three is ideal for this young speedster who is likely to be up on the pace. Proven over the mile, and further. Won over the 1600m at Kembla Grange in September when stepped up to it at career start number three. Third to Best Case in their next mile start before their good Randwick win from outside barrier (10 of 10) over 1800m on November 5. Drop to 56.5kg here under the set weights conditions, gun draw, smart horse, bypassed Melbourne especially for this so they should be prime for it.
#14 Miss Rose De Lago ($3.30)
Is going to need to jump well and get into a good position early from her wide (12) draw here, but definitely deserves her shot. Form has been spot on, three wins from five career starts, including latest two at the track over 1400m then 1600m against the fillies. Group 3 winner last Saturday, needs to handle the short back-up and the boys but has class to do both with the right run.
#5 Ihtsahymn ($11)
Prime to get a good run from barrier two, just need to make sure they put themselves in it and don’t get lost in the big field. There’s been lots of money come in for them and they’re the genuine market mover – could be worth following that money trail. Top form as a juvenile last season including a Westspeed Nursery Handicap win over the mile in June where they won by three lengths. Had two unplaced runs this time in, most recently in the Fairetha Stakes when only two lengths off the winner. It was a good run and they made up ground giving every indication the step up to the mile again is what they’re after.
