Takanori Tops Jungle Mist Classic 2013 Field & Betting

They are the last of the runners assured of a start, but the Sharon Miller-trained Takanori is the punters’ pick to win the 2013 Jungle Mist Classic at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse this weekend.

One of seven black type races running at the track for Railway Stakes Day, this year’s fillies and mares only $100,000 Listed Bulmers Jungle Mist Classic (1200m) is due to jump at 2:40pm (local) as Race 5.

The field is made up of 16 confirmed starters plus two emergencies.

Wearing the No. 16 saddlecloth from barrier eight with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver engaged for the ride is Vital Equine mare Takanori.

Winner of the Listed WA Breeders Classic (1400m) at Bunbury back in March, the now four-year-old sits top of the Jungle Mist Classic odds for their first run since a 1000m Belmont Park win back on July 6.

Lightly raced with just four career starts, Takanori is undefeated and paying $3.80 to keep their flawless race record intact with win number five on the weekend.

There are then four other single figure chances in the Jungle Mist Classic market with:

  • #8 Celebrity Miss ($5.50) – Rails draw for the always honest Grant Williams-trained More Than Ready mare, a winner of four of her nine starts to date, has finished first or second in their past five runs and comes off a nice Benchmark 60 win over 1100m here from November 9 when carrying 57.5kg, drop back to 55kg here and should get a gun run from the gate with that weight
  • #4 Mendicity ($7) – Jim Taylor’s Blackfiars five-year-old has a wide barrier 15 draw to overcome but class to do so, last win was back in February over this track and distance after which things have been a bit hit and miss, came close on November 5 however when second to The Rising in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) and will appreciate coming back to their own gender here
  • #14 Rose Of Choice ($7.50) – Choisir four-year-old after their fourth win on the trot after winning three straight in August – September, most recently won at Belmont Park (1300m) on September 7 but showed they were ready to again with a 2.5 length winning trial over 1000m at Bunbury on November 15, this is their first black type assignment since failing in the WA Breeders Classic back in March when behind Takanori but have come on since and ready to step up in grade
  • #7 Baleen In Me ($9) – Gun gate two draw as the local Flying Pegasus four-year-old looks to shake off their placegetter-only status and finally win a race following three third place finishes this time in, before that won at Belmont Park during winter but haven’t raced in stakes company before and will need to be at their best

Other hopes at longer odds with claims for an upset Jungle Mist Classic result on Saturday then include Ejay’s Girl ($11) backing up from a win at the track just last Saturday, Neville Parnham’s  last start Pinjarra winner Dark Rock ($15), Rouge Dior ($17) looking to improve on a last start ninth in the Colonel Reeves in open company and the resuming Storm Burst ($17).
