Sujet Debuts in 2013 Placid Ark Stakes Field

Simon Miller’s unraced but highly spruiked debutant Sujet is set to race for the first time this Saturday at Ascot in the Placid Ark Stakes 2013.

One of the key support races on the Railway Stakes Day program, this year’s $100,000 Listed Miller Genuine Draft Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) for three-year-olds features a final field of 13 hopefuls.

Despite this being their maiden run, the bookies are already naming Vital Equine gelding Sujet as the one to beat.

Drawn in gate 10 with Douglas Whyte to ride, the exciting youngster earned their Placid Ark Stakes favouritism after winning their latest barrier trial by a blistering seven lengths.

Back in July Sujet won back-to-back trails at Lark Hill (400m) and then Belmont Park (1000m).

They were bought back into work during the spring and their latest trial effort at Belmont on November 11 was very promising.

Still, Saturday’s field is full of class and it certainly won’t be an easy first-up assignment.

The two other top chances look to be the Jim Taylor-trained Petrol Power (barrier eight) and Daniel Pearce’s Testa Rossa gelding Testamezzo (barrier 11).

Nicely-bred Snitzel gelding Petrol Power won the Listed Supremacy Stakes (1100m) back in March before their Perth Stakes second one run later.

Blocked for a run with eighth in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) in their last run that prep, they returned on October 19 and were beaten just a long neck in the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m).

They were second again in their latest run on November 9 when beaten three quarters of a length by WA Guineas hope Saint Bro in the Listed Fairetha (1400m).

Originally accepted for the $400,000 Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) on Saturday, after drawing wide in gate 14 connections decided to scratch them and give them a go against easier company in the Placid Ark.

Testamezzo meanwhile is on a short back-up having won the Appleton Estate Sprint over 1000m at the track just last Saturday when carrying 59kg.

It was an eye-catching effort and they should appreciate dropping back to 57.5kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions on the weekend.

“I don’t want to over-cook this one – he’s a special horse,” Pearce told Perth Racing this week.

“He pulled up okay so we decided to go ahead.  He’s going to be winning nice races down the track if we look after him.”

Along with Testamezzo the other last start winners in contention are the Trevor Andrews-trained Guardlock with the rails run from gate one and the lightly-raced Max Almighty having just their third run here.

Other notable hopes then include Belgravia third placed Coruscation and Super Eighty Eight coming off a Fairetha fifth.
