Rohan Heads 2013 Tattersall’s Cup Field

This Railway Stakes Day at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday is host to plenty of black type racing action, one of the majors on the card being the Tattersall’s Cup 2013 where Rohan will jump favourite if they line-up.

Vaughn Sigley’s Blackfriars gelding is a dual acceptor for the Perth Summer Racing Carnival meet this weekend.

They are in the final field for both the $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2100m) as well as the more prestigious $1 million Group 1 Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (1600m).

The five-year-old however is only the third emergency for the bumper Railway Stakes field and so is unlikely to earn a start leading them to run in the Tattersall’s Cup.

Drawn in gate six in the 14 starter, one emergency Cup field Rohan is allocated 58kg with Glenn Smith to ride.

It’s a big weight, the heaviest of their 14 start career to date, and one they will have to be at their best to cart to victory.

Winner of the Belmont Guineas last year before spending over a year sidelined with injury, Rohan returned this October with a nice second to dual Kingston Town Classic winner Playing God in the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m).

Their next start produced a third to Platinum Rocker in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) where they raced wide throughout.

Their Belmont Guineas winning jockey Smith then reunited with them for their most recent run last Saturday, a brave third to Kerrific and Elite Belle in the Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes (1500m).

They are now on the short back-up and will be going up notably in distance for the Tattersall’s Cup, their first look at further than a mile in 19 months.

Tattersall’s Cup weights meanwhile are topped by the Grant Williams-trained Moonlight Bay (59kg).

The six-year-old Catbird mare is after back-to-back wins having won the Listed Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) last start, albeit carrying only 55kg.

There are then two other 58kg hopes along with Rohan with recent Northam Cup winner Angel Of Mercy, stablemate of Moonlight Bay, looking to improve on their Ascot Gold Cup 11th and the Justin Warwick-trained eight-year-old Black Tycoon drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers 15 and 4 respectively.

The inside barrier went to Reset four-year-old Mystic Price this year, Williams third runner to be ridden by William Pike on 55kg.

Last seen running a brave fourth to their stablemate in the Ascot Gold Cup, Mystic Prince is after their first win since taking out the WATC Derby over the mile and a half here back in April.

Other notable hopes then include seven-year-old Cyber Crime, Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Finnegans Gold who also ran second in the Northam Cup and local mare Starlight Lady coming off a second in the Listed Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) from September.
