Unsurprisingly Rob Heathcote’s Brisbane star Buffering has opened top of the Winterbottom Stakes 2013 odds following the release of the final field and barriers for the Ascot feature running this Saturday.
Drawn in gate eight with their regular jockey Damien Browne in the saddle the $2.10 Winterbottom Stakes betting favourite shoots for their third consecutive Group 1 win.
It took old Buffering a long time and plenty of heartbreak before they finally broke through at elite level winning the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley last month.
They kept it going then having found their feet with a last start victory over Shamexpress in the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) on November 9.
Now Heathcote has his stable ace over in WA for the Winterbottom before they are turned out for a well-earned break.
While the Queensland raider is the obvious horse to beat in the sprint showdown on Saturday, there are still three other single figure fancies in the markets.
The best fancied to score an upset Winterbottom Stakes result are then:
- #4 Barakey ($4.40) – Jim Taylor-trained Key Business gelding won the Winterbottom last year in a stellar effort, their 11th win from as many career starts, they were sent to Melbourne after that but injured their knee and suffered their first loss (11th in the Newmarket), spending a length time on the sidelines they returned on October 26 at Ascot and showed off with a Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes win as the odds-on favourite, they’re capable of going back-to-back but do need to hold off Buffering
- #2 Spirit Of Boom ($7.50) – the other Queensland raider in the field, this Sequalo six-year-old has outstanding form aroundt he country including their recent Caulfield Sprint win and their last start second on Melbourne Cup Day over 1200m at Flemington, distance is right and trainer Tony Gollan says the 44-start veteran is spot on for this as they shoot for their maiden Group 1 trophy after a number of close calls over the years including their third in this last year when defeated only 0.6 lengths after having been blocked for a run
- #3 Moment Of Change ($7.50) – Peter Moody-trained Melbourne visitor comes off a good third to Winterbottom favourite Buffering in the VRC Sprint, before that was fourth to them again in the Manikato with just half a length separating them, a Group 1 winner in their own right however having taken out the 2012 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes so capable of turning the tables if Buffering’s had enough

The only other runner in the markets under $20 is then the consistent Power Princess ($12).
Second in the Winterbottom Stakes on this day 12 months ago, Simon Miller’s seven-year-old Marwina mare has her first go at the Railway and the mile here.
She’s won over the 1400m before though when backing up from the Winterbottom last year to take out the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m).
Hasn’t done much racing since with setbacks restricting her to just the two runs, but one was a Group 3 Roma Cup win in May and the other was a devastatingly close second to Barakey in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) this October.
The next best in betting are then Trevor Andrew’s last start Colonel Reeves Stakes winning four-year-old The Rising and Lee Steere Stakes runner-up from November 9 Checkpoint for Neville Parnham at $26 a pop.
