Champion Fillies Stakes Winner 2013 WA Guineas Bound

Simon Miller’s smart young filly Miss Rose De Lago could have a date with the boys in the WA Guineas 2013 this Saturday, November 23, after her weekend win in the $200,000 Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m).

Local horseman Miller is looking at backing the daughter of Encosta De Lago up in the lucrative $350,000 Group 2 Sky Racing W.A. Guineas (1600m) after her all-the-way win in the fillies’ feature at Ascot Racecourse.

Ridden in a bold front running style by Peter Knuckey the up-and-coming three-year-old jumped the $1.80 favourite and saluted for the punters beating home the Neville Parnham-trained Via Laurentina ($8) by three quarters of a length.

It was the same quinella result as Miss Rose De Lago’s last start when she defeated the same filly in the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m).

Miss Rose De Lago and Knuckey dictated proceedings right from their lovely jump from barrier two, setting a pace too fast for many as they ran the first 1000m in a blistering 58.33 seconds.

There was nothing in the minor placings with Balmont Girl ($10) the same distance from the winner in third before Parnham’s other runner, $51 outsider Vital Importance ran fourth over four lengths from the dominant WA Champion Fillies Stakes trifecta.

After the speedy effort Miller named the WA Guineas just seven days later as the next likely target for his progressive filly who has now won three of her five starts for over $220,000 in prize money.

“I don’t know whether she’s had enough, but she was pretty fierce today and sweated up before the race,” Miller told The West Australian on Saturday.

“This is her first campaign and she has had five runs.

“You can be bullish about this filly because she is really good and nine times out of 10 they won’t let you down.

“I am mindful this is her first campaign.

“I will accept with her (for the WA Guineas on Monday) and just see how she goes.”

It is an assignment she certainly earned with her winning Champion Fillies Stakes time of 1:35.24 being the fastest of the past 13 editions of the classic.

It will be a tough assignment for her however as she faces her star stablemate Saint Bro, the undefeated Flying Pegasus gelding leading the futures WA Guineas betting markets.

Sitting at a quote of around $3.80 in the pre-field WA Guineas odds the lightly-raced Saint Bro debuted with a win at Ascot on October 30 before backing up 10 days later to win the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m).
