Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Floria was the best-backed runner in 2013 Summoned Stakes betting market and justified the betting move with a tough victory in the Group 3 event at Caulfield this afternoon.
Floria over raced in the early stages of the race and was forced to make up ground, which had been difficult at Caulfield this afternoon, but was too good for the rest of the field when asked for an extra effort.
Peter Moody admitted that he thought Floria would be very difficult to beat in the Summoned Stakes this afternoon and was happy that jockey Craig Newitt, replacing an injured Luke Nolen, was able to get the Savabeel mare out of trouble.
“It got a bit busy the race there at some stages but luckily Craig was able to eradicate her and she got the job done,” Moody said.
“She deserved the win and she did look a good thing on paper but we wanted to convince ourselves that she would be winning too.”
Floira has previously competed at Group 1 level, finishing third in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and sixth in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Victoria Derby Day, and Moody said the six-year-old would return to the highest level of racing in the autumn.
“She has never been far off them and she has raced with the best mares in in her last five or six runs,” Moody said.
“She will have a nice let-up now and she will run through the mares races in the autumn, similar to how she did this year.
“Hopefully we can snag a couple more with a bit more luck.”
Newitt only picked up the ride on Floria after Luke Nolen was injured before the running of the first race, after being flung off by Bullpoint, and was given a tough assignment by the mare who took a while to settle in the early stages of the race.
“She began as good as anything down on the inside but she just had a few stragglers burn across and it really stacked up down the side,” Newitt said.
“Once I negotiated a path down the outside her class shone through.”
Newitt finished today’s meeting on top of the jockey challenge with Craig Williams but will have no time to celebrate.
The leading jockey will fly to Singapore tonight for the Singapore Gold Cup before returning to Australia for the Tasmanian Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Launceston on November 20 and heading to Perth for the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) next weekend.
