No horse has ever won the Sandown Stakes in back-to-back years, but Mahisara had the run of the race and was given a terrific ride to record an impressive win from the fast-finishing Go The Knuckle and enigmatic Darley entire Galah.

Mahisara was having just the second start of his 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign, after finishing fifth behind Richie’s Vibe in the Listed MSS Security Sprint (1200m) on Melbourne Cup Day, and Messara said after the race that the Sandown Stakes was always the major target for the son of More Than Ready.

“He is a year old and he is an entire but the plan was to come down here and target this race and then go back to Sydney and head towards the Villiers,” Messara said.

“He is a horse that has a lot of potential and it is just finding the right race for him.

“It was a fast race today and he hung on really well but if he gets a slightly slower tempo and can have his way up front he can be very strong at the finish.”

Mahisara gave Craig Williams his third straight victory in the Sandown Stakes, winning with Under The Eiffel in 2011 before going back-to-back with Mahisara, and the leading jockey clearly has a big opinion of the five-year-old entire, as well as his trainer.

“Paul has done a good job; every time he comes to Melbourne or I go to Sydney he gives me some good opportunities,” Williams said.

“He is a delight to ride; I’ve had a really good associating with Mahisara and he put the writing on the wall first-up here in Melbourne.

“Paul was delighted with the way that he has come on and the weights of this race, as well as the way that he won it last year, made it his right race on paper.”

Mahisara will return to Sydney and chase his third victory at Group level in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on December 14.
