Snowden Spins Pinwheel in Kevin Heffernan Stakes 2013

Darley’s head trainer Peter Snowden will play a strong hand across the feature races at Caulfield’s Sandown Guineas Day this Saturday, but one horse he would especially love to see salute is his 2013 Kevin Heffernan Stakes hopeful Pinwheel.

Among Snowden’s top chances in Melbourne are the likes of Galah in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1400m) and the smart young Paximadia who will jump favourite in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m).

Pinwheel meanwhile is one of the single figure fancies out to defeat favourite Platelet in Race 8 – the $135,000 Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1200m).

And it is Pinwheel Snowden will be really cheering for as they’ve been an honest and consistent force for the stables for so many years.

“I’d give my left and right arm to see him run well Saturday because he’s that sort of horse to us,” Snowden told The Daily Telegraph.

Paying $7 in markets led by Darren Weir’s dual Adelaide Group 1 winning mare, Lonhro eight-year-old Pinwheel has a wide barrier 12 of 13 draw to overcome in their third run this prep.

The veteran galloper is also out to break a lengthy losing spell with their last victory being the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) back in August last year.

Since then their best efforts have included a close fourth to Barakey in Perth’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) 12 months ago, and their first-up fourth when defeated under half a length by Arinosa in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick this spring.

Their latest run was a fifth to subsequent Emirates Stakes winner Boban in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 19, Pinwheel returning to the track out to improve in the Kevin Heffernan which Snowden believes is very possible.

“I feel he’ll be somewhere near his best on Saturday,” Snowden said.

“I think he’ll run a great race, he’s good in himself, he’s had a freshen-up, he’s a great weight-for-age horse who is in good order.”
