Sandown Stakes Betting Tips 2013

A big line-up of Group and Listed races is set to light up Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday including the 2013 Sandown Stakes– betting tips from the Races.com.au team for which are detailed below.

Galah

With a final field of 11 smart gallopers this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1400m) is set to run as Caulfield Race 5 at 2:50pm (AEST).

Of those it is the Peter Snowden-trained Galah who is leading the Sandown Stakes odds at a current quote of $3.80 after coming up trumps with barrier three.

The Redoute’s Choice five-year-old was runner-up as the beaten favourite in the Group 3 TAB.Com.Au Stakes (1400m) on Derby Day and will be out to atone for that this weekend.

The other two single figure chances are then Richie’s Vibe ($4) to be ridden by Damien Oliver from gate five, and Craig Williams’ mount Mahisara ($4.6) in gate eight.

But are these top three fancies the ones to lock into your Sandown Stakes trifecta selections?

Or is there more value to be found from an upset chance with claims such as recent Tristarc Stakes runner-up Koonoomoo ($12) or Lord Of Brazil ($12) who is down in class here.

1st

#1 Galah ($3.80)

There’s been a few queries coming from their trainer but we think the favourite Galah can get the job done here and salute for the punters after giving them some frustrations over the seasons. They’ve been in good form leading up to this and often do their best racing towards the tail end of a prep so fourth-up should work in their favour. Caulfield is currently rated Slow and Galah’s Slow track record (4-2-1-0) is excellent. Should more rain fall they’ve also own on Heavy before so still the one to beat. Gets a gun run in gate three with McEvoy aboard, and their last start second was behind a smart horse in Smokin’ Joey who is not in this.

2nd

#2 Lord Of Brazil ($12)

Hasn’t run since their eighth in the Crystal Mile on Cox Plate Day, but their form on Slow – Heavy tracks is outstanding and it’s likely to be rain affected at Caulfield on Saturday. Their latest run on a softer track produced a third in Tasmania back in February and they should relish the give out of the ground and the step back in class here having also run seventh in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap this spring.

3rd

#11 Lady Of Harrods ($26)
Really big odds on this roughie of the bunch who is better than her price suggests. Poised to get a run from gate two as she vies for her first top three finish since her narrow win over Commanding Jewel in the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield 14 months ago. She’s had two runs this time in, a forgivable first-up 10th following an awkward jump in the Alinghi Stakes before showing improvement at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day when 12th in the Group 3 GH Mumm Stakes (1100m). On paper 12th looks bad but she was beaten only 4.5 lengths and had a big 58.5kg, goes down to 56kg here and will be smarter with tongue tie on.
