Smart local galloper Rohan has opened the clear early favourite to win the RJ Peters Stakes 2013 at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse this Saturday for their first win of the season.
One of two features on the Ascot race card for the weekend, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) has drawn a quality final field of 13 hopefuls.
Of those it is Blackfriars five-year-old Rohan who is heading the RJ Peters Stakes odds at a quote of $4 after drawing the inside alley.
Getting in on just 54.5kg the gelding hasn’t won a race since last year’s Belmont Guineas, after which they were sidelined for over a year with a leg injury.
Also a Group 2 winner last year taking out the WATC Derby as a three-year-old, Rohan resumed on October 12 and ran just a long neck second to Playing God in the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m).
They were third in their latest run then behind Platinum Rocker and Vermeer in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) on November 2.
There are then three other single figure chances in the RJ Peters Stakes odds with:
- #3 Vermeer ($5.50) – Last start Asian Beau third placegetter tipped to improve after drawing gate two for Saturday, jockey change with Jason Whiting replacing William Pike (aboard rival Elite Belle) – Pike having ridden them for their past five starts, last time in the winners stall was March in the Pinjarra Classic and now looking to step up at Ascot again
- #6 Elite Belle ($6.50) – Gets Vermeer’s previous jockey Pike for this, Grant Williams’ Canny Lad mare jumps from barrier eight on the 54kg minimum which is two kilos less than she had on her back last start when second in a Benchmark 72 at the track on November 2, before that she won (same track, conditions, distance) first-up and should be on the improve again here going up in class
- #9 Luke’s Luck ($9) – Daniel Morton-trained Show A Heart four-year-old was sixth in the Asian Beau, before that fourth in the Northerly Stakes to Playing God first-up, and before that was in Queensland for the winter when third in the Sunshine Coast Guineas, has class and the distance should suit as they’ve form up to a mile, hasn’t got the best winning strike rate but from barrier five a place chance for sure
Also in the mix at slightly longer odds out for an upset in the RJ Peters are then the likes of super consistent five-year-old Comfysofa ($10) who beat Elite Belle home last start for their fifth win from 10 career runs, recent Boulder Cup winner Fanicio ($11) carried 58.5kg for their last start fifth in the Kalgoorlie Cup going back to 54kg here and winner of the Belmont Sprint during the winter Kerrific ($13).
