Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The third race on a bumper nine event Sandown Guineas Day program at Caulfield this weekend will be the 2013 Eclipse Stakes, betting selections and insider tips for which can be found below.
Due to jump at 1:30pm (AEST) this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) features a final field of 10 hopefuls with the clear $2.35 favourite being Rain Drum.
Drawn in gate three and set to carry the second heaviest weight with 57kg, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fastnet Rock six-year-old has been in good form this spring.
At home in Sydney they enjoyed a first-up win in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) before travelling to Melbourne.
They’ve had two Victorian runs for the season with a Crystal Mile fourth on Cox Plate Day and then fourth again on Melbourne Cup Day when stepped up to the 1800m.
They carried 56.5kg there, and 59kg the start before, so can handle their weight allocation for Saturday and should enjoy running over the distance again.
Looking at the Eclipse Stakes betting markets their main dangers look to be early market mover Bel Thor ($5) coming off a 2000m Flemington win from last Saturday, the 59kg topweight Mouro ($5) and Irish import Hartani ($9.50) racing down under for the first time.
But is it the single figure fancies you should be tipping in your Eclipse Stakes bets on Saturday?
Or will there be a boilover early in the day from the likes of Kyneton-based galloper Felidea ($11) or Adjuster ($13) who both ran second in their lead-up race?
#2 Rain Drum ($2.35)
They’re a little short in the markets for us but still think the form on the favourite is the right one to stick with. Will get a lovely run from barrier three, prepared by an in-form trainer and just starting to enjoy the other way of racing after such good form at home in Sydney. Group 2 winner first-up and their Melbourne Cup Day fourth was promising when running over this distance. They’ve won up to 2000m so they can win over this too.
#7 St Gabriel ($19)
At this price they add great value and think they can handle the rise in class here. It’s a tougher assignment than they’re used to but Ryan Balfour’s Adelaide raider is up to the challenge. They’ve won their past three on the trot at home at Morphettville over 1800 – 2020m so the distance is right and from barrier five with only 54kg should be right in it.
#1 Mouro ($5)
Definitely think Mouro has class and the ability to handle the 59kg topweight, they carried 58kg to victory in the Sale Cup last start over the mile. Have had a few weeks since to recover and prepare, and their record at Caulfield is good, but this is their first look at the distance so how the lightly-raced five-year-old handles the step up will be key to their chances. Gate 10 but plenty of time to overcome, Damien Oliver will help out in the saddle.
