Top-rated local hope for the upcoming Group 1 Railway Stakes, Rohan will get their chance to secure a start in the Perth Summer Racing Carnival classic when they run in this Saturday’s 2013 R.J. Peters Stakes field.
One of two Group races on the Ascot program on the weekend, this year’s $125,000 Group 1 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) has drawn a final field of 13 hopefuls.
It should be a hotly contested affair too with the RJ Peters Stakes winner exempt from ballot for the $1 million Railway Stakes (1600m) back at the track on November 23.
One runner desperate for that ballot free ride into the Railway is Vaughn Sigley’s Blackfriars five-year-old Rohan.
Winner of the WATC Derby – Belmont Guineas as a three-year-old back in 2012, Rohan spent 16 months on the sidelines recovering from a leg injury.
They returned in October for a brave second to Playing God in the Northerly Stakes and then ran third last start on November 2 in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) behind Platinum Rocker.
Currently sitting 22nd on the latest Railway Stakes order of entry, Rohan needs to win this weekend to get a guaranteed start in the Group 1 for which they are the $10 third pick for.
Railway Stakes betting is led by Queensland mares Fire Up Fifi ($8) and Longport ($9.50).
Rohan will reunite this weekend with Glenn Smith, the duo to jump from the inside alley which Sigley is worried won’t give them enough galloping room.
The next shortest priced Railway Stakes hopes running in the RJ Peters are then Elite Belle ($17) and Vermeer ($18).
The Grant Williams-trained Elite Belle (barrier eight) won at the track over 1400m two back before their game last start second on November 2 behind fellow RJ Peters hope Comfysofa in a Benchmark 72.
Bruce Watkins’ eight-year-old warhorse Vermeer meanwhile was runner-up to in the Asian Beau last start, the evergreen galloper continuing to be competitive despite their age.
Also Railway Stakes-bound are the likes of Dan Morton’s progressive Show A Heart gelding Luke’s Luck ($31), and $51 outsiders Grand Nirvana and Kerrific.
Scenic eight-year-old Grand Nirvana for Fred Kersley carries the 61kg topweight as they line-up for their 45th career start.
Kerrific follows in the RJ Peters Stakes weights then with 59.5kg, the Blackfriars seven-year-old looking to improve on their first-up ninth to Conservatorium in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) last Saturday.
