After a form return on Melbourne Cup Day running second in a black type gallop, Midsummer Sun returns to the track on Saturday vying for their first win since the winter.

Sam Kavanagh’s imported Monsun five-year-old was one of 13 horses nominated for this year’s $350,000 Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m), the usual Sandown feature running at Caulfield Racecourse this year.

They haven’t won a race since saluting at Caulfield over 2000m back in May and return to the track for the first time since on the weekend.

After a failed two run bid in Brisbane during the winter carnival the gelding was turned out, returning in Sydney this October with a seventh to Strike The Stars.

They improved on that at Flemington on Cup Day however when running a solid second, despite an awkward jump, to German import Salon Soldier in the Listed Visit Victoria Plate (1800m).

Kavanagh is now hoping they can improve on that again and win their maiden stakes race as they face a field of horses that have had a tougher spring campaign.

“I’m pretty happy with how he’s going and he’s on an upward spiral,” Kavanagh told RSN’s Racing Ahead.

“Obviously, these horses are at the end of a long Carnival and we’ve come into the Carnival with these races late as our main goal.

“He’s going there on Saturday ready and I’d like to see him run top four.”

It is shaping up as a cracker Zipping Classic field this year too with Bart & James Cummings’ Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner from Emirates Day, Precedence, the drawcard contender.

To help prepare Midsummer Sun for the Classic Kavanagh has been working them at the beach, something the horse seems to be thriving from.

“We’ve had him down the beach this week, just poking around, and his work this morning was outstanding,” Kavanagh said on Tuesday.

“The vet’s been over him, he’s sound and scopes clean. The horse is really bright, so I’m really looking forward to Saturday.”

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver, aboard Midsummer Sun on Cup Day, retains the ride this Saturday.
