Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After a stakes win at the track back in September, Cranbourne-based It Is Written returns to Caulfield Racecourse this weekend for a shot at the 2013 Kevin Heffernan Stakes.
One of six Group races on the Zipping Classic Day program this Saturday, the $135,000 Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1200m) attracted a bumper 25 nominations.
Robbie Griffiths’ It Is Written sat 17th on the ballot for the capacity 16 starter field, likely to gain a run however with an attrition rate of only one above them on the order of entry at final acceptance stage this morning needed.
The Written Tycoon five-year-old enjoyed a narrow win over Richie’s Vibe in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) back on September 29 which was the gelding’s maiden black type victory.
They’ve had two runs since finishing dead last in an unexplainable shocker in the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) before their sixth, when carrying a hefty 60kg, in a Moonee Valley handicap on Cox Plate Day.
“That run was inconclusive and if he had got equal opportunity, he would have been highly competitive,” Griffiths said of the run at the Valley where It Is Written was beaten only two and a half lengths.
Griffiths is hoping It Is Written can bounce back on Saturday however under the weight-for-age conditions of the Kevin Heffernan Stakes after bypassing some of the spring stars during the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Some of the big name Kevin Heffernan Stakes hopes this year include John Sadler’s Stradbroke Handicap winner Linton, the Peter Snowden-trained 40 start veteran Pinwheel, dual Group 1 winning mare Platelet and last start Randwick winner Famous Seamus.
While hopeful about his horse’s chances, Griffiths is also realistic that under WFA conditions meeting a horse like Platelet (56.5kg), scratched from the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic last weekend, with their 58.5kg will be a tough assignment.
“Those sort of horses will be very hard to beat and the conditions make him more of an underdog,” Griffiths told AAP.
“But he is in good order and galloped very well in trackwork – it’s just a question of if he is good enough on the day.”
If all goes to plan after the Kevin Heffernan Griffiths will target It Is Written for the $120,000 Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) back at Caulfield on Boxing Day, December 26.
