Galah Leads Sandown Stakes 2013 Field

Peter Snowden is preparing to saddle-up a number of livewire Zipping Classic Day chances at Caulfield this Saturday including Galah in the 2013 Sandown Stakes field.

Along with his Carbine Club Stakes winner Paximadia in the Sandown Guineas, five-year-old Redoute’s Choice stallion Galah looks a top chance for Snowden and Darley on the weekend.

One of 11 chances in the $150,000 Group 3 Ronald McDonald House Monash Sandown Stakes (1400m), Galah is equal 58kg top-weight with the Darren Weir-trained Lord Of Brazil.

Due to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy from a gun barrier three draw they were last seen running second to Smokin’ Joey in the Group 3 Stakes (1400m) on Derby Day at Flemington.

Before that they were a luckless third to subsequent Emirates Stakes winner Boban in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m), Snowden hoping with a better run at the track this time they can finish first for their maiden win since the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) in Brisbane back on June 1.

The only other Sandown Stakes runner coming off a top three finish is then Tony Vasil’s last start Flemington winner Richie’s Vibe.

Drawn in gate five the Danerich four-year-old enjoyed a Melbourne Cup Day victory over Sea Lord when ridden by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver and now vies for back-to-back victories with Oliver retaining the ride.

Also in the mix is the Paul Messara-trained Mahisara, Craig Williams’ mount to jump from gate eight for their second-up run of the season.

First-up the Scone-based More Than Ready five-year-old ran a credible fifth to Richie’s Vibe on November 5, Mahisara not having won a race since their big three length victory in this race 12 months ago when held at its traditional home Sandown.

Other notable hopes looking to improve on some disappointing recent runs include Tristarc Stakes runner-up to Red Tracer two back Koonoomoo, Rubiton seven-year-old Freereturn and Lady Of Harrods.

The official Sandown Stakes 2013 field, barriers, jockeys and weights are detailed below.
