Girl Gone Rockin Snatches Momentum Energy Stakes On The Line

Team Hawkes-trained Girl Gone Rockin flew home late to steal victory on the line from Queenstown in the Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) at Flemington this afternoon.

Queenstown, with Nash Rawiller on board, looked like she was a certainty to give trainer Gai Waterhouse another big win during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival when she hit the front with 200 metres left to run but Girl Gone Rockin swooped down the outside to record her first victory at Group level.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn has not had much luck during the 2013 Melbourne Cup Carnival but timed his race perfectly on the daughter of Redoute’s Choice and was delighted to score his first victory in the race formerly known as the Matriarch Stakes.

“I’ve had too many seconds; anymore seconds and it would be a minute,” Dunn joked after the race.

“She is a lovely mare, she deserves to win a Group race like this and she will make a lovely broodmare one day.

“The speed was very genuine and there was a little bit of cut out of the track, which really helps her, and she really pinged her ears.”

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes admitted that he did not think that Girl Gone Rockin was going to catch Queenstown but was absolutely delighted that the five-year-old mare had claimed victory; a win that substantially increases her value as a broodmare.

“I thought with about thirty yards to go that we were not going to win and then right on the line she just bobbed the right way.

“It was something special really to win a Group 2 mares race over the four days of the carnival and this mares value has gone up by about three-fold in the last minute and a half.”

Girl Gone Rockin was extremely impressive and looks as though she would handle a step-up in distance but Hawkes said that they would have to reassess their future plans for the five-year-old; indicating that she may be sent to be served at stud.

“She is Group 2 winner now and we need to decide what we are going to do with her after today,” Hawkes said.

“She will probably go to the paddock now.”
