Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Rhythm To Spare may be an outsider in 2013 Emirates Stakes betting markets but trainer Michael Moroney remains hopeful that the progressive gelding can give him his maiden victory in the $1 million Group 1 event.
Rhythm To Spare raced at Group 1 level during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, finishing fourth behind Hawkspur in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), but will be returning to the highest level of racing for the first time this spring.
The Pins gelding started his campaign with a win in the ChampionPicks.Com.Au Handicap (1400m) at Sandown on August 28 before suffering a cardiac arrhythmia when he finished at the tail in the Dalziel Racing Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield.
The four-year-old returned to the winners circle in the Superior Food Service Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on Thousand Guineas Day and finished a most unlucky third behind Mouro and Mutual Trust in the Sale Cup (1600m) on October 27.
Moroney believes that the 2013 Emirates Stakes field is one of the strongest that he has ever seen but believes that it would have been silly not to run Rhythm To Spare who gets into the race on the limit weight with just 52kg on his back.
“It’s a very, very strong field, and while we’ve always had a really good opinion of this horse, this is a hell of a race,” Moroney told TVN.
“We know how strong this race is and how tough for him it will be, but it’s likely he’ll never get into a race like this again on the minimum, so we thought it was worth a throw at the stumps.”
Moroney admits that it has been an up and down preparation for Rhythm To Spare but said that he has been happy with his form when he has been able to get to the races without any issues.
“He hasn’t had the perfect preparation because we had the issue with the atrial fibrillation thing at Caulfield on Underwood Stakes day,” Moroney said.
“He had virtually a month between runs, won well at Caulfield, then got too far back in the Sale Cup when he ran on really well for third.”
